Is Christmas losing its luster?

Is it me, or does Christmas not feel like Christmas anymore? Commercials, movies, malls, Wal-Mart, Target…it’s just really hard to find the Christmas spirit this year. I can’t put my finger on it. Sometimes, I look back and wish I was 10 years old again. I miss the feeling of getting two weeks off of school at Christmas. I miss the anticipation of Christmas coming, even though it was 7 days away. I want the feeling back of not being able to go to sleep on Christmas Eve, knowing that just 18 steps from my bedroom lay the results of my letters, pleas and petitions to Santa Clause. I miss waking up on Christmas morning to the aroma of coffee and sausage biscuits perforating throughout the house, and seeing my grandma in the kitchen, knowing that she would be the first one to wish me a Merry Christmas. I miss the Saturday trips to the store with my dad, so I could shop for my mom and buy her nothing that she wanted. I know that I would still get the smile from her on Christmas day when she opened the box of horrible smelling perfume and her telling me that she loved it. I miss fighting with Renee on who got to play Santa that year.

We still have traditions in our family for Christmas. Calling each other on Christmas Eve and Christmas day to say “Christmas gift” first, even though there is no prize, it’s the principal of the matter! Taking the time to watch everyone open their gifts one-by-one to show off who got what, and watching National Lampoons Christmas Vacation on Christmas night quoting the entire movie. We also have the traditional (started 3 years ago) trip to Denny’s at 11:00 on Christmas Eve to get breakfast. I enjoy the traditions, but also like starting new ones. I guess I will have to see what ones we can come up with this year.

Any suggestions?

My five favorite Christmas movies of ALL time!

Hey all, I thought I might share with you my five favorite Christmas movies. I will go down the list for you and explanation why!

Movie number 1

How could you not love this movie? The Griswold’s…They are America’s family! Cousin Eddie…need I say more? If you can’t remember a line, just ask. I can recite the entire movie!

Movie number 2
This is a feel good movie, and I honestly think Tim Allen is a very good Christmas movie actor! I recommend to watch it.

Movie number 3

How can you not love the Muppets? I watched it last night and had a hard time deciding if this was number 2 or 3.

Movie number 4

Again, another Tim Allen movie. But get this, Tim Allen, Dan Akroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis. That makes for a really funny, good Christmas movie!

And last but not least…number 5

I give you Will Farrell, and he does not even get naked in this movie (thank goodness). I really like this movie, because it is not overdone with comedy like his normal movies.

I suggest you find time to rent these if you don’t own them, or give me a call and come over and watch. You are always welcome to come over and watch a Christmas movie with me at the house!

Just ask Jessica!

Precipitation equals job security…

Well, I can be the first one to tell you that Insurance never sleeps. While all of you were nestled all snug in your beds Monday morning, I was on the road at 6:15 a.m. driving to work. While I love cold weather, I really hate ice. I love snow, but in Oklahoma, one day of snow equals 3 days of ice. 2 days of cold rain and night time temps at 29 degrees equals 5 days of ice.

In some aspects, it’s good. I know this sounds bad, but the more accidents that occur, the more secure my job is. Here is my question…Do I feel bad for the idiots in their SUV’s, Suburban’s, and Trucks when they slide off the road and cause damage to their vehicles? My answer…NO! 4 wheel drive does not mean, “My vehicle is impervious to ice”.

Jessica and I are without power right now. Last night, Jessica added 4 blankets to the bed and flannel pillow cases. She made a very comfy bed. We bought candles and batteries for flashlights. We have plenty of firewood for the fireplace and good friends that have offered their house if worse comes to worst! We were lying in bed last night and Jessica said, “this is kinda fun…it won’t be tomorrow, but right now it is.” I was thinking “yeah, this is fun, but wait till the house is 20 degrees in the morning, and then we’ll talk”. I hope Faith is OK and keeping herself warm under all the blankets.

At work right now, we are running solely off generators. Half the building does not have power and the other half is overloaded with people from upstairs. It is a load of fun…like I said earlier, Insurance never sleeps.

Hopefully we get power sometime soon and ICE STORM 2007 will be behind us!!

Ahh memories...

Today my family and I went to eat Thanksgiving lunch with my nephews at their school. The food wasn’t half bad and the chocolate milk was the bomb! Oh how I miss the chocolate milk…
It makes me think about my favorite teachers back in school. Just last night, Jessica and I saw my 3rd grade teacher, Mr. Kennedy in Lowes. I remembered her, but didn’t want to go up to her and do the whole “hey, you remember me from 22 years ago?” thing. She, by the way was one of my favorites. I also remember Ms. Bartley, Mr. Attebery, Mrs. Mallett and Mr. Williams. Those are the 5 teachers that stand out to me in a positive way.
One day, if you see me and want to hear about the teacher from HELL…and we are talking about the FIERY PITTS of HELL, then I will tell you about my 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Bishop. I honestly think she was Satan’s sister. It could be that I was a horrible 4th grader, but I still think she was related to Satan in some way.

That’s it for today!

7 days and counting untill Jessica and I are off to California! We are both very excited and ready to get out of town. I still don't think we have very many plans. We will probably play a lot of it by ear.

Jessica and I are still Sooner fans! Yes it sucks that we lost, but you have to keep your head up and live to play another day! Get ready Texas...

Played some poker last night. I did not come in last, so I would call it a good evening of cards!

Immigration soapbox

Recently in the world, The ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) have made raids on local and national businesses looking and arresting Illegal Immigrants. I have mixed feelings about illegal immigrants. On one hand, they help our economy in many different ways, but on the other hand, they drain our economy. I wanted to take a few minutes and talk about this. (This is my blog. The views and comments expressed are my own, so if you don’t like them…Eat it).

Yes, Illegal Immigrants come over and work jobs, send the $ back to their families in other countries and take advantage of the healthcare in our country. Some have RISKED their lives to jump a border and provide a good life for their family that is over here with them. Wouldn’t you? Think about it. You have a family that you are trying to support in a different country for 16 cents an hour. If someone told you that you could move to a different country and make $5.75 an hour flipping burgers or $6 an hour to mow lawns, wouldn’t you do it?

I am tired of hearing the excuse that they are coming to this country and stealing jobs. They are not stealing jobs; they are working the jobs that no one wants to do. (This next section is not written to offend anyone…I PROMISE). Our society today has become career conscious. People want to sound important, even if they are a blue collar worker. Who do you think is going to work harder at a fast food restaurant? An Illegal Immigrant who’s soul purpose for having that job is to keep it and supply food and shelter for his family. Or Billy Joe, whose dad said, “You need to learn the value of a dollar”, even though Billy Joe knows that regardless if gets fired for not showing up on time, he still has a home to go to every night.

I understand that 100% of Illegal Immigrants are not pure hearts and that some are drug dealers, smugglers, criminals, etc. My question to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is this, Why are we going after Immigrants that are WORKING at the time in Restaurants, Meat packing plants and other nationally recognized places? It’s like shooting fish in a barrel. If you know where they are, and are making a difference in society, why go in, shut down a business, deport people and leave their CHILDREN without care? I just don’t get it???

Rice-a-roni, the San Francisco treat

Guess where we are going? That’s right, you guessed it; Jessica and I are headed out to San Francisco. After Friday’s news from the Dr., Jessica and I decided it was time to get out of town. We rarely go out of town just the two of us. It is usually with Family, or to go see family or friends, or business. We just told ourselves, we need to go somewhere where we don’t know anyone, won’t have to see anyone and just get away. We both have been to San Francisco, (Jessica on business, and I went back in High School) but we did not have the freedom to do whatever we wanted to.

It is going to be so much fun. Two guaranteed things we are going to do, rent a car and drive to Napa Valley and possibly go on a wine tasting tour, and Alcatraz. Other than that, the sky’s the limit!

Golf

As you all probably know by now, I am a big fan of Golf! I play every weekend and try to at least get in one twilight round during the week. Over the next 2 months, I am going to be golfed out of my mind. From this weekend until October 28, I have a golf tournament every Saturday and sometimes the following Sunday! In order, I am playing in the Choctaw school tournament, FEAPAC, PIP, March of dimes, ERAC, Hertz, Edmond CofC and the WOW club tournament. To top that off, College football just started and I think a couple of these tournaments are going on during the game. I think Jessica and I are going to try to go to the Miami game this Saturday and then Sunday will start off my golfing! Got to love this time of the year!

Lonely

Well, tonight marks a week since I have see Jessica. I’m really bored, lonely and wish she was home. I have kept myself busy with family dinners and cooking for Liz and Nathan. Last night I made spaghetti since Jessica was out of town and invited Nathan and Liz over for dinner. I hope they liked it and were not just humoring me. Regardless, I only make spaghetti when Jessica is gone since she is not a fan of the red sauces. During and after dinner, Nathan and I watch as his tigers beat the hated Yankees 16-0. Nathan was very excited.

College Football starts this week! I’m pumped. I am ready for Saturdays at Chilli’s with Jessica watching and hoping the Sooners will prevail in all their games! Nonetheless, win or lose; I am still a fan of good football.

I think Faith is more ready for Jessica to come home. She is not liking to sleep by herself on Jessica’s pillow. Jessica is coming home tomorrow night. She is due in around 10:05. I will be there with bells on ready to see her! She is going to have a 4 day weekend and I will have a 3 day weekend! We are looking forward to spending some time together…finally for the first time in 4 weeks!

My weekend

Friday afternoon I packed up and headed out to Missouri for a fun weekend with Jessica’s Grandpa. I had told him a few months ago that I would take him up to St. Louis to go to their travel and transportation museum. I decided to leave around noon on Friday to beat out the OKC to Tulsa traffic and the storms that were moving in.

I arrived in Springfield around 4:30 and was greeted with Grandpa in the garage cleaning it out. After helping him stretch to put things away, it was time to get a bite for dinner. We went to Western Sizzlin, (Sizzlin Steakhouse) as Grandpa calls it. We had a nice evening, just hanging out and talking.

Grandpa and I wake up and leave the house around 7:30 Saturday and begin the drive to St. Louis. We end up getting there around 11:30 and go into the museum. Boy did Grandpa have a good time. We were there about 3 hours and drove back. Had another nice evening at the house.

Woke up this morning and started driving back around 7:30 this morning to have a day at the house and rest before beginning work next work.

Well, it has been a while since I have seen Jessica. The next time I see Jessica, it will have been a week. She has been traveling a lot lately for work. She will be back on Thursday night and is going to have a 4 day weekend next week.

My B-day is in 2 weeks! I will have a busy birthday weekend. Birthday on Friday and Golf tournaments on Saturday and Sunday. I know, I know…but someone’s gotta do it!

Have a good week!

I must be slipping in my old age

Last night Jessica and I went out with Brooke, Derek Liz and Nathan for Derek’s Birthday. We went to BJ’s (get your mind out of the gutter) for dinner. Really nice place, good food, fun atmosphere and the BEST home brewed Root Beer around. And believe me, I am a Root Beer Connoisseur. They also have very tasty home brewed beers.
After dinner, we all made our way over to the bowling lanes to get our bowl on! Nathan is a great bowler. He is in a few bowling leagues and boy did it show last night. I don’t know if you know me well enough, but I a bit of a “talker”. I rarely back down from a challenge, so I felt compelled to step up to the plate and take on Nathan in a friendly wager. Right before we began, Derek came up to me and asked if we wanted to go head-to-head, and of course (not backing down from the challenge) I accepted. Needless to say I owe Nathan 8 frosty beverages the next time we play golf and I owe Derek 2 frosty beverages. The reason Nathan gets 6 additional drinks is because during the second game, Nathan has to pick up a 6-7-10 split. STUPID me opens up my mouth and say’s “you pick that up, I’ll buy you a six pack”. What happens, HE GETS IT!!! That was it, I had been humbled. I look at it this way, I will get him all 8 drinks next time we golf, and see how he does then!

Happy Birthday Derek, We had a great time last night!

Ultimate Vacation

Survey…
What would you do with a million dollars and 2 months off work?
Don’t respond with the usual pay off bills, get out of debt and quit your job.

Here’s what I would do…
First off, 1 cell phone would be taken, but turned on only to be used for an emergency. I would take Jessica to Europe for the first 3 weeks. First class all the way. We would go to Paris, Rome, Stonehenge, Greece and Amsterdam!!!!! When we got back, I would then take her on a cruise to Alaska or another Disney Cruise.
For the next 30 days, it would be a mission. I doubt Jessica would want to come along for this mission, but she would be more then welcome. Remember, after the first trip, I would estimate I would have about $400,000-$500,000 left over. I would buy the fastest sports car that was street legal; and I would try to catch a baseball game in at least 24 ballparks in the U.S. Catch a game, get in the car and start driving to the next. If I was to get pulled over for speeding, I would have some cash to pay the fine and keep going! I would love to do it with football games, but I would only be able to catch them on weekend games. That would be my ultimate vacation trip.

If you have a few minutes, let me know your ultimate vacation. Remember the limits, 1 million dollars and 2 months off work.
Lets throw in one more kink, you have a free babysitter for those 2 months off.

ARE YOU FRICKIN SERIOUS?

OK, so my sister calls me last night and say's "turn on NBC and watch this". So I turn it on and there is a new show called “The singing bee”. I turned it on just as the final round is coming on and watched this guy win 50K just for knowing the words to I wanna rock and roll all night. Seriously? I would school people on this game show.

Prior to this, I was watching The world series of pop culture and holy crap; there was a girl on the show that I wanted to literally kick in the head through my TV. She did not get one answer correct on the 80’s pop hits category. Her only response was that she was only 2 when that song came out and did not have a clue to the answer. Her husband was a team member and you could see him with his face in his hands shaking his head.

I’m thinking of starting a Wii tournament sometime. Let me know if anyone would be interested.

This just in…Farmers Insurance, Inc. Just beat out Chesapeake Energy for the Best employer in Oklahoma (over 500 employees). Woo-hoo!

That’s it for now.
